President's Message
Kenneth Courter
Good Day,

Last Thursday we heard from Beth Rosenberg and Christine Hillock with the Loudoun County Department of Family Services.  They referenced that volunteers are needed for the Advisory Boards in the county.  Volunteering in this capacity offers rewarding experience to the community.  The work is similar to the Rotary Mission on a local scale.  If you like to know more please call.

This week you will hear Brian Cannon with OneVirginia2021.  Gerrymandering is a hot topic in the news.  Learn more about how democracy is manipulated.  We can make a difference in how votes are marginalized in the favor of the incumbent.  Brian will give examples and explains the impact on our election system.

Thanks for volunteering last week with the Lion’s Eyesight Screening.  They count on us for person power.  This has been a great relationship the past two years.  This past weekend we also helped ITAVB with their charitable works.  On Saturday we cleaned up litter from Crosson Road in Ashburn.  Special thanks to Tony and LeAnne for organizing this event.  Great to see that the Interact Clubs also pitched in on Saturday.  Many other big and small events are planned.  On November 16th we have Mr. Walter Hughes from Rocky Mount Rotary Club to discuss our Water Project in Africa.  The Rotary Governor visits on December 7th.  This will also be a Toy Drive for children in the community.  The Holiday Party is December 14th and on Saturday, December 16thwe are helping the Salvation Army with Bell Ringing.

Please make time for service.  It pays back ten fold for your heart and soul.

Stories
Executive Director of OneVirginia2021 to Speak
The Rotary Club of Ashburn, VA is pleased to welcome Brian Cannon, Executive Director of OneVirginia2021, as our guest speaker on Thursday, October 26.  Join us to learn about Brian's  experience in non-profit leadership, community building, fundraising, and bipartisan advocacy for state policy issues, to include redistricting in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Brian previously worked as a consultant with startups and high-growth companies.  While in law school, Brian studied election law and was on one of the winning teams in the 2011 state-wide redistricting competition.

Brian is a double William and Mary graduate (2011 JD, 2004 BA).  He and his wife, Kelly, live in Richmond, Virginia with their son.  When not working on redistricting reform, he serves on several non-profit boards and plays rec league football.

D7610 Providing Assistance for Puerto Rico
Many of you have asked how you can help the people of Puerto Rico (PR) in their time of great need. D7610 Disaster Relief Chair Don Wellen and E-Club Member Gene Gains have organized a Solar Lighting/Cell Phone Charger Project, in coordination with District 7000 in PR. District 7610 will purchase 300 Solar Chargers and ship them via 2-Day Air to San Juan where the District 7000 Clubs will distribute them to key areas without power. Rotarians and District Clubs can contribute to this project by sending a check to the District 7610 Foundation, c/o Disaster Relief Chair Don Wellen, 6512 River Tweed Lane, Alexandria, VA 22312. Any funds received in excess of the $9,000.00 budget will be sent directly to a Fund recently established by District 7000 to help those in need, as designated by the local clubs and District 7610.

This Project will directly impact the lives of the people of PR and enable them to communicate with loved ones on a regular basis. In addition, they will also have access to a powerful light source which will lift them out of some of the darkness they have been living with for quite some time. This is truly a “Feel-Good Project”.

World Polio Day Scheduled

One Day, One Focus, Ending Polio.

World Polio Day is October 24.  Join Rotarians across the world as we come together for the 5th Annual  World Polio Day event, co-hosted with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.  At 2:30pm PDT (21:30 GMT) we will stream live from Gates Foundation headquarters in Seattle, bringing together more than 100,000 viewers around the world. Join us as global health experts and celebrities share our progress on the road to polio eradication.

More than one million Rotary members have donated their time and personal resources to end polio. Every year, hundreds of Rotary members work side-by-side with health workers to vaccinate children in polio-affected countries. Rotary Members work with UNICEF and other partners to prepare and distribute mass communication tools to reach people in areas isolated by conflict, geography, or poverty. Rotary members also recruit fellow volunteers, assist with transporting the vaccine, and provide other logistical support.

Remember, we are this close to ending Polio.  To learn more on what you can do to help see  https://www.endpolio.org/world-polio-day

The Four-Way Test

The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. The test has been translated into more than 100 languages, and Rotarians recite it at club meetings:

Of the things we think, say or do

  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
