President's Message
Kenneth Courter
Dear Fellow Rotarians,
This week I want to stress the importance of becoming an officer or director of our club. These past few months have been personally rewarding. Each week I place great importance on the experience. Standup and nominate candidates who wish to serve.

You are also invited to throw your hat in the ring. The Rotary experience offers personal growth, community and global understanding. Rotary International offers training and advancement.  It is your choice to learn to help Ashburn. The development will improve your leadership and organizational skills. Give back to get back. We need your brilliance and creativity.

We have a special appeal to help citizens of the U.S. Virginia Islands. This request was made by our fellow Rotarians with Leesburg Daybreak.  Their previous President's family resides in St Thomas.  His father is a Rotarian and active in getting paradise put back together again.
I'm in NYC this week. Hope to attend a Rotary meeting in Brooklyn.

Rotary:  Making a Difference

Director of Events for the Northern Virginia Human Trafficking Institute, Maria Buczek, to speak
The Rotary Club of Ashburn, VA welcomes Maria Buczek, Director of Events for Northern Virginia Human Trafficking Institute as the guest speaker this week.  Maria will share valuable information on the crime of  human trafficking.
Maria became aware of the magnitude of human trafficking in the spring of 2016. After the realization that this was happening to millions of people around the world, including in Northern Virginia, she felt she could not turn a blind eye to the problem and began to educate herself about the issue and search for ways to help in the battle to end this horrific crime. In April 2017, Maria accepted the volunteer position of Director of Events for Northern Virginia Human Trafficking Initiative where she plans awareness and fundraising events; provides human trafficking awareness training; and manages the speakers bureau for the organization.
D7610 Providing Assistance for Puerto Rico
Many of you have asked how you can help the people of Puerto Rico (PR) in their time of great need. D7610 Disaster Relief Chair Don Wellen and E-Club Member Gene Gains have organized a Solar Lighting/Cell Phone Charger Project, in coordination with District 7000 in PR. District 7610 will purchase 300 Solar Chargers and ship them via 2-Day Air to San Juan where the District 7000 Clubs will distribute them to key areas without power. Rotarians and District Clubs can contribute to this project by sending a check to the District 7610 Foundation, c/o Disaster Relief Chair Don Wellen, 6512 River Tweed Lane, Alexandria, VA 22312. Any funds received in excess of the $9,000.00 budget will be sent directly to a Fund recently established by District 7000 to help those in need, as designated by the local clubs and District 7610.

This Project will directly impact the lives of the people of PR and enable them to communicate with loved ones on a regular basis. In addition, they will also have access to a powerful light source which will lift them out of some of the darkness they have been living with for quite some time. This is truly a “Feel-Good Project”.
The Four-Way Test

The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. The test has been translated into more than 100 languages, and Rotarians recite it at club meetings:

Of the things we think, say or do

  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
