NOVEMBER 28, 2017 IS GIVING TUESDAY -- Making a contribution to The Rotary Foundation is an excellent way to give back this year -- your contributions help eradicate polio, promote peace and conflict resolution, support education, prevent disease, and end hunger!  So, while preparing your lists this year, be sure to set aside a little something for The Rotary Foundation!  Together, a little goes a long way!

President's Message
Kenneth Courter
Good Day,

This week we start work on an International water project in Africa.  Our speaker Walter Hughes has just returned from a three week visit to Ghana.  This Rotary International project is worthwhile and relieves the water needs of humans struggling everyday with basic survival. Please attend and learn more about the commitment the Rotary Club of Ashburn and our three Interact Clubs are making to this project.

The Toy Drive is our last major community work in 2017.  This project is in coordination with It Takes a Village Baby!  Over the next few weeks we will be asking the community to donate to the Toy Drive.  On December 7th when the District Governor visited we plan for 2,000 pounds of new and slightly used Toys to be collected.  I've written each of you to request that you also pitch in and ask your neighbors, family and friends to bring you unwrapped Toys. With everyone's involvement we will have 100 boxes in the community for the Toy collection. On December 9th the toys will be distributed to the needy in our community by Rotary and It Takes a Village Baby volunteers.

Have you signed up for Salvation Army Bell Ringing?  The following link will give you an example of the enthusiasm that will draw the most contributions:  https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=piQit-_-_YI

The Holiday Party will be at Black Finn this year. More details to follow.  Please be sure to wear your ugly sweater.

Elections are right around the corner.  Ballots will be distributed shortly.

See you Thursday.

Rotary:  Making a Difference

Water Project in Africa
Water Project in Africa

The Rotary Club of Ashburn, VA is pleased to welcome this week's guest speaker, Rotarian Walter Hughes, who will share his experiences with water projects in Africa.

Walter earned Rotary’s Vocational Service and the Rotary Distinguished Service Awards.  His work was also highlighted at the Rotary International Conventions in Sydney and Seoul with the video “Doing Good in Ghana.”  He’s recognized as a White House Champion of Change.

Walter’s team passionately provided clean water to over 400,000 people in Africa.  He partners with one hundred fourteen (114) Rotary Clubs in thirty-two (32) Rotary districts in Québec and Ontario in Canada, Switzerland, Ghana and South Sudan and twenty-one (21) U.S. states.  He also works with other non-profit organizations and churches.

Walter championed Rotary projects over the past ten years to locate wells in communities with the highest incidence of Guinea worm disease in Ghana and South Sudan.  The World Health Organization certified Ghana as free of Guinea worm disease in 2014. He traveled to South Sudan during the civil war in November 2015 to inspect Rotary’s clean water project.  There are nine Guinea worm cases so far in 2017 in the world.  Rotary is close to eradicating both Guinea worm and polio.

He worked as the Director of Strategic Technology at America Online (AOL).  He is now an independent missionary.  He the proud father of four children.  Walter goes to Ghana where he sees clean water flowing, sanitation with new Microflush toilets, new medical equipment at hospitals and computer labs at schools.  He is empowering communities to work with Rotary to drill more wells where people are thirsty.

  • All battery operated toys need to be tested and with working batteries.
  • Books should be in excellent condition.

Of the things we think, say or do

  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
